Mentors

The Kidsgloves mentoring programme has been designed to give mentors a rewarding and meaningful experience with young people. To help both you and the mentee develop valuable interpersonal skills that you can take into the work place.

Our Mentors should aim to:
  • develop the self awareness and confidence of students
  • raise aspirations of students
  • raise the standard of achievement of students
  • encourage and support the progression of young people  into higher education, and have a real appreciation of learning into adulthood

What does a mentor do?
  • Set up regular contact with the young person helping him or her to reflect on their aspirations and hopes for success.
  • Monitor progress against  agreed targets
  • Offer practical advice at key junctures in a young person’s academic life
  • Help with application forms and letters
  • Offering  general support as and when appropriate

What makes a good mentor?
  • Being Consistent: Many of our subjects are existing in quite chaotic environments it is important you represent something different to that and essentially you are one less thing to worry about . You need you to be consistent and fair.
  • Being a good listener: An ability to look for the story behind the story especially at the formative stage of the relationship can help you develop real dialogue with the young person.
  • Being a role model: Be yourself and use your experiences wisely
  • Being flexible: allow the young person to lead and design the format of meetings (This could take the form of phone calls, web chats, emails whatever works for the pair of you).  Also in terms of length, frequency and content (there's not much point in meeting every week if it really does not warrant it).
